How do I become a Canyoning Guide?

By completing a training for a Canyoning-Guide. Training will be provided by different nations with different prices. Coution is reccomended here with some of them, as there are still many trainings that are not backed through the union or have no legal backing. This would start problems with the insurance company in case of an accident. The authority to give guided tours in other countries or other states can be restricted depending on the training. Therefore we reccomend a training with on of the state representatives of the Österreichischen-Bergsportführer-Verbands. Furthermore a mountain guide (IVBV) can take a training as a canyoning guide or an additional module.

How exhausting is Canyoning?

Canyoning is somtimes called the pentathlon of the alps: climbing, swimming, jumping, sliding, roping. All of them can seem exhausting when you wear a neoprene suit – you are limited in your movements. Even when Canyoning tours go from easy to extrem, a good physical condition or general fitness is an advantage and makes it definitely more relaxed.
It surely makes sence, to talk to the guide about it be before starting the tour or consider it when planing the tour.

How dangerous is Canyoning?

Very often Canyoning is described as an extrem-sport. But as it is with almost all other sports, you can do Canyoning on a very save level.
The question you have to ask yourself is, do I want to take a guided tour with a certified guide or do I dare to take the tour on my own. The first mentioned gives you the objetive alpine risks, such as falling rocks, which are very easy to estimate. On the other hand, taking tours by yourself, requieres a certain amount of expertise as the rope technique you know from climbing differs very much. Floodwater is an additional danger, as it is difficult to escape tight  canyons quickly. You also should not underestimate the group dynamic, when for example, jumps are taking place of greater and greater hights. Here lies the highest potential of reducing the accident statistik.
